First, scrub the grill with a brush to remove any stubborn residue. The metal bristles will surely remove burnt food and some of the rust, but to clean more effectively, preheat the grill for 15 minutes before rubbing. This will loosen food and grease scraps and make them easier to remove.
Fill a large bucket with hot water, dish soap, and baking soda. Add 1 cup (240ml) of dish soap and ¼ cup (60ml) of baking soda. It isn’t enjoyable so that it will do a great job. Mix until paste forms.
Remove the grid if it is removable and soak it in the bucket for 1 hour. This will allow the baking soda and soap to penetrate and loosen the rust. If the grill is too large to submerge in the bucket, rub the baking soda mixture onto the ribs with a brush. However, keep in mind that this may be less effective than soaking, especially if there is a significant amount of rust. Namely, heat is always your ally in the fight with residue and rust.
Considering the uses in the household, a mixture of baking soda and water on the ribs is very effective. Turn the grill on over medium-high heat until the mixture begins to bubble. As the baking soda bubbles, it will lift the rust. After a few minutes, turn off the heat, then scrub with a scrub brush and wipe dry. To keep rust from reappearing, be sure to dry your grill. Get a clean rag or towel and wipe it down until it is scorched. Return the grates to the grill when dry.
