Milanese Stitch

The Milanese Stitch is worked in diagonal rows or arrowhead-shaped stitches. Each stitch is made of four individual stitches, each getting progressively larger, being worked over one, two, three and four intersections of canvas. It can be worked in a single color, or in two or more colors by working each diagonal row in a different color.

If you look closely at the stitch, you will see that it also features rows of “steps”  when viewed from the opposite angle – try working the steps in two or more colors as well.

Milanese stitch can be used to fill shapes in a design, or as a background stitch.
